New Music Venue set to open in Des Moines

Lefty’s Live Music, a 300+ capacity live music venue, is slated to open in Des Moines this spring. The address will be announced as soon as the details of the real estate transaction are finalized. The mid-sized concert hall plans to host music from a variety of genres by national, regional and local bands in the heart of a neighborhood already packed with character and life. The venue will add a much-needed boost to Des Moines’ music scene, and will focus on exceptional entertainment, superior sound and a relaxed atmosphere. Casual fans and hard-core music lovers alike will find a home at Lefty’s Live Music.

Des Moines has a diverse and talented music culture. It deserves a venue that is sound centric and passionate about the continued growth of the Des Moines music scene. A quality sound system is paramount to a quality listening experience and Lefty’s is squarely focused on providing the best sounding room in Des Moines. Utilizing a top notch system sound system and the most modern technology, the room is being designed solely with the listeners experience in mind.

Live entertainment will be featured four or more days a week and will host shows that are both age 21 plus and all ages. Our staff will be a small, but well-trained family working to provide a friendly, accessible environment for all patrons. The venue will feature a full-service bar open during all performances and on days when the stage is dark.

Lefty’s Live Music was born from the old adage “if you want something done right, do it yourself.” It is the brainchild of local entrepreneurs Anne Mathey and Erik Brown. Combined, Mathey and Brown have more than 30 years of experience in music and bar management. Brown has a long history in the music industry as both a musician and promoter. Fronting local prog-rock band The Maw and having played with local favorites such as Thankful Dirt, Dave Zollo and King of the Tramps, Brown holds a special place in his heart for local music of all genres. Transplanted several years ago from Augusta, Georgia, Brown has become a dedicated and involved part of the Des Moines music community.

Mathey is known in the music community from her days behind the bar and as manager for The House of Bricks. After more than a decade managing the-day-to-day operations of a thriving venue, her experience will be invaluable to Lefty’s operations, service and quality.

Several local venues, including The House of Bricks, have recently closed or announced closure. We have heard music lovers concerns, desires and wants for the Des Moines music scene and are dedicated to seeing their fulfillment.

Lefty’s Live Music is named after Mathey’s three-legged mixed breed dog. Lefty has become somewhat of a mascot for the live music scene, having appeared at several events and parades in Des Moines in the last several years. Lefty’s unbridled passion for life, despite his special needs, is only equaled by our passion for Des Moines music culture.

The Des Moines music community is very much a family and Lefty’s Live Music is our way to give something back to the city we love.

Lefty’s Live Music is slated to open this spring and the location will be announced shortly. Get ready for a new dog in town!
